Skanska picked for Swedish university expansion

19 Jan 16 Skanska is to carry out SEK1.5bn (£122m) of new-build and refurbishment work at Linnaeus University in Kalmar, Sweden.

The company has signed a 10-year lease with the university, covering SEK1bn of construction work and SEK500m for the conversion and extension of other premises on the campus.

Skanska will develop and construct three new buildings in the eastern part of the campus, with a total area of 43,000m2 including underground parking. One will house the university library while the other two are for classrooms, offices and laboratories.

The second contract involves the refurbishment and extension of three buildings up to six storeys high, with an approximate area of 22,000m2. The buildings in the western part of the campus will primarily house lecture halls, auditoriums and offices.

The goal is that the refurbishment, the extension as well as the new construction will be environmentally certified in accordance with LEED.

Construction will begin next month. The western part of the campus is expected to be completed by summer 2019 and the eastern part by summer 2020.
