Skanska picked to modernise Washington DC school

5 Jan 16 Skanska has signed a contract for the next phase of modernisation and expansion at a school in Washington DC.

The total contract value for the work at Lafayette Elementary School is US$72m (£53m). The latest work, which is worth US$51m, follows an initial US$21m phase that was included in Skanska's order bookings for the third quarter 2015.

Lafayette Elementary School, which serves nearly 700 students, was built in the 1930s, with an addition in the 1970s. The current building has an area of 9,200m2. The 11,000m2 expansion project will replace the section added in the 1970s, as well as providing an additional 5,500m2.

The modernisation will include the restoration of the existing façade, total interior renovation of the 1930s structures, enlargement of the existing car park and the renovation of all exterior play and field surfaces as well as the provision of green roofs and stormwater management features.

The project is slated for completion in November.
