Skanska starts £300m AstraZeneca HQ

18 Feb 15 Skanska has begun construction of the new AstraZeneca headquarters in Cambridge.

Skanska has a £300m contract to build the AstraZeneca research and development centre and corporate HQ on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The development, which secured planning permission earlier this month, has been designed for the pharmecuetical company by Swiss architect Herzog de Meuron.

The laboratories on the site will be separated from other work spaces by glass walls to promote ‘visible science’ and thus scientific innovation. Open spaces and thoroughfares arfe designed to encourage collaboration not only within AstraZeneca, but also with the wider scientific community across the campus.

The building will be low rise around central courtyard reflecting the colleges of Cambridge University.

AstraZeneca is seeking Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM) Excellent status for the site.

The Cambridge site will bring together AstraZeneca’s small molecule and biologics research and development activity. It will become the company’s largest centre for oncology research, as well as housing scientists focused on cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, respiratory, inflammation and autoimmune diseases and conditions of the central nervous system.
