Skanska team places first element on $2.1bn tunnel project

31 Oct 14 A key milestone has been reached on the Midtown Tunnel project in Virginia, USA, with the placement of the first segment.

The new two-lane Midtown Tunnel is part of the US$2.1bn (£1.3bn) Elizabeth River Tunnels project, which also includes upgrades to the existing tunnels and associated roads. The design-build project is being carried out by a joint venture of Skanska USA Civil Southeast, Kiewit Construction Company and Weeks Marine as part of a public-private partnership sponsored by Skanska Infrastructure Development and Macquarie Infrastructure & Real Assets.

The 18-hour placement process culminated on Tuesday when the doors of the 16,000t element were opened and a survey and inspection of the connection was completed. Placement of the remaining ten tunnel elements will continue moving eastward across the Elizabeth River to Norfolk at the rate of approximately one every five weeks. Element two is currently scheduled for placement in mid-November.

The project is due for completion in December 2016.
