Skanska to build tram to research hub

16 Feb 17 The municipality of Lund in Sweden has appointed Skanska to build a SEK710m (£62m) tramway running to a major research facility under construction on the outskirts.

The new tramway will link Lund Central Station to the European Spallation Source (ESS), northeast of downtown. The 5.5km, double-track line includes nine stops, a new bridge. Construction work will begin on 1 March and the tramway is due to be ready for test runs by the end of 2018.

ESS is a pan-European facility that will be used in a number of research areas such as the environment, medicine, food and materials. The plant is a neutron source where researchers from all over the world will be able to study materials to understand how they work and function. Skanska is already building the facility, most recently signing the third phase of the project (link opens in new tab).
