Spain delivers 6,500t of rail tracks for new Sydney metro

22 Mar 16 More than 100km of railway tracks have arrived in Australia from Spain for the AU$8.3bn (£4.4bn) Sydney Metro Northwest project.

“We’re wasting no time in getting on with delivering this game-changing project for the people of Sydney,” said minister for transport and infrastructure Andrew Constance.

About 6,500t railway steel was shipped to the Port of Newcastle from Spain in 20m lengths via container ship. Transportation of the 20m lengths – each weighing about 1t – has started to the Sydney Metro Trains facility at Rouse Hill.

The steel will be laid between Epping and Rouse Hill on Sydney Metro Northwest, Stage 1 of Sydney Metro – Australia’s biggest public transport project.
