Last week EC Harris was awarded the contract for employer’s agent services and the procurement for a design and build contractor for the scheme.

The tender notice has now been published for a main contractor, on an ECI (early contractor involvement) basis.

The A487 Caernarfon to Bontnewydd bypass consists of a new 9.8 km highway between the Goat roundabout (A499/A487 junction) and the Plas Menai Roundabout. It forms a western bypass to Llanwnda, Dinas and Bontnewydd before crossing the existing A487 to pass south of Caernarfon Quarry. It then crosses the River Seiont, passes south of the Cibyn Industrial Estate to a junction with the A4086. After crossing the B4386 the route drops to the Plas Menai Roundabout.

It will have two lanes of travel in one direction and a single lane in the opposite direction providing overtaking opportunities in the two lane direction while prohibiting overtaking in the single lane direction.

There are eighteen structures comprising seven bridges (including a crossing over the Welsh Highland Railway, a 280m bridge over the River Gwyrfai and a 300m bridge over the River Seiont) and 11 culverts.
