Think tank to investigate construction apprenticeships

1 Jul 14 Think-tank Demos is calling for evidence from across the construction industry for research it is undertaking into construction apprenticeships.

Demos is providing research support for a cross-party commission investigating apprenticeships in the construction sector and aims to produce a report by the end of this year.

It has put together a panel of commissioners that includes Midas Group chairman Steve Hindley as well as an actual construction apprentice with recent first-hand experience to contribute.

The Demos commission hopes to be able to come up with some answers regarding how industry and government can together enhance its apprenticeships offer.

The commission plans to undertake study visits to sites across the UK, to draw on examples of leading edge practice in the sector.

The commission is co-chaired by Robert Halfon MP, Conservative member for Harlow, and Labour peer Lord Maurice Glasman. Other members are:

  • Peter Box, Local Government Association
  • Mike Cherry, national policy chairman for the Federation of Small Businesses.
  • Kirstie Donnelly, managing director of City & Guilds
  • Steve Hindley, chairman of Midas Group
  • Nazir Huseinmiya, National Construction College 2013 apprentice of the year and 2013 construction operative of the year
  • Steve Radley, director of policy at the Construction Industry Training Board
  • Stewart Segal, Association of Learning Providers
  • Ray Wilson, Carillion Training Services
