Three UK bidders beaten in Fehmarnbelt tunnel tender

A joint venture of Denmark’s Hansen & Henneberg and Germany’s Pövry Infra has won a major consultancy contract for the Fehmarnbelt tunnel.

The contract is for the design of electrical and mechanical systems in the tunnel that will link the two countries.

Developer Femern picked the JV from a list of four prequalified bidders, with Mott MacDonald, Arup and Capita Symonds on three of the losing teams. The bidding teams were Mott MacDonald; a Ramboll-Arup-TEC joint venture; Grontmij in a joint venture with Capita Symonds; and    Cowi in collaboration with HBI Haerter, M&E Engineering, GBI Gackstatter Beratende Ingenieure, Barbara Consult and HOJ Consulting.

Hansen & Henneberg and Pövry Infra will assist Femern throughout the tender phase and may also assist during the construction period.

The electrical and mechanical systems in the tunnel include, among others, power supply and systems for lighting, communication, ventilation, drainage, fire fighting, intelligent traffic control, traffic signage as well as installations in the control centre and the toll station.
