Train hits construction equipment

5 Feb 16 Northern Ireland rail operator Translink is investigating how an unspecified item of construction machinery was left on a railway track and hit by a train.

The collision occurred between close to Knockmore industrial estate, south of Lisburn, at around 6.45am on Thursday 4th February 2016. No one was hurt but rail services were disrupted for the rest of the day.

Translink is investigating in cooperation with both the Rail Accident Investigation Board and the police.

In a statement Translink said: “We can confirm that a train struck a piece of construction equipment that was on the railway line south of Lisburn… Emergency services were called to the scene. There were no injuries to passengers and staff involved and passengers on board were taken safely from the train and transferred onto alternative transport to complete their journey.”

It added: “Safety is our top priority and we are currently carrying out a full investigation into the nature of this incident.”
