Turner & Townsend to manage £333m Aberdeen conference centre

4 Jan 16 Turner & Townsend has been appointed project manager for the £333m New Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre (AECC).

The 105,000 m2 complex includes a 12,500-capacity concert arena that can also be used as an exhibition arena.

The development, next to Aberdeen International Airport, includes an adjoining 4-star hotel, with two additional hotels alongside to be developed within the first phase. The masterplan for the site allows for future development of up to 60,000 m2 of offices and 6,000 m2 of leisure. Detailed planning permission was granted by Aberdeen City Council on 10th December 2015.

The AECC is expected to open in time to host the 2019 Offshore Europe trade show.

The new facility will be serviced by an energy centre and anaerobic digestion plant that will not only power and heat the development but also supply an income stream to help cover the cost of the development.

Turner & Townsend will be working for property developer Henry Boot Developments, the city council’s partner on the scheme. It will project manage the first phase of construction and be responsible for the overall programme management of the masterplan, which will be built out on the site of the Rowett Research Institute at Bucksburn. The Institute is relocating to another part of the city.

Turner & Townsend director Andy Outram said: “We have supported Henry Boot throughout the whole bid process with the city council and we’re looking forward to being a crucial partner in delivering this state-of-the-art public facility, which will compete on a world stage.

“Over the next three years, our role will be to overcome numerous challenges including construction so close to the airport, diverting large scale utilities and repositioning three existing watercourse to create a new park.”
