US trade mission targets Middle East infrastructure

12 Mar 14 US secretary of commerce Penny Pritzker is leading a trade mission to the Middle East this week to focus on infrastructure opportunities.

She is being accompanied by a delegation from 21 companies on the mission, which is her second to the region since taking office last June.

The visit has started in Abu Dhabi in the UAE to target the opportunities in the UAE’s major investment in infrastructure and transportation systems. The first meetings were with representatives of Mubadala, a development company that is investing in renewable energy, educational facilities, transportation, and logistics. The delegation also visited the Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority, which currently serves approximately 40%t of the UAE’s population and is working to expand its capacity.

Pritzker then spoke to business and government officials at a luncheon where she highlighted the growing US-UAE bilateral trade relationship, noting that US exports to the UAE have more than doubled since 2009. She said that the companies on the trade mission are eager to do business in the UAE, and to serve as partners on a number of infrastructure projects the country has undertaken in areas such as renewable energy and transportation.
