The board said that it had no plans to replace him, and that Mr Lindup’s operational responsibilities would be absorbed by senior colleagues on the executive management team.

Chief financial officer Paul Pearson replaces Mr Lindup as company secretary.

Tom Lindup joined geotechnical contractor Van Elle as group managing director after 15 years as a corporate lawyer ahead of its October 2016 stock market listing.  He is the son-in-law of Van Elle founder, Michael Ellis. His wife Suzanne holds more than three million shares in the company (3.8% of the total). Michael Ellis himself retired as chairman at the end of 2016.

Acting chairman Adrian Barden said: "On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Tom for his contribution to the group, in particular in the development of Van Elle's legal and governance functions, and we wish him well in the future."
