Veolia to build desalination plant in Kuwait

15 Jan 14 Veolia Environnement has won a €320m (£270m) contract to build a major seawater desalination plant at the Az Zour North complex in Kuwait.

The Az Zour desalination plant will account for approximately 20% of Kuwait's installed capacity. Construction of the plant is part of the Az Zour North electricity generation and water production project located 100km south of the Kuwaiti capital.

The engineering, purchasing and construction contract was won in partnership with Hyundai Heavy Industries. Veolia, through its subsidiary Sidem, will build the plant, which will have a daily production capacity of 486,400m3 of water. Hyundai will be responsible for building the 1,500MW power station.

Veolia has already built the Az Zour South water desalination plant, which is currently in the start-up phase.

All the electricity generated and the water produced will be purchased by the Kuwaiti government for 40 years. Work is scheduled for completion by the end of 2016.

The overall project was awarded a year ago to a consortium of GDF Suez Energy International, Sumitomo and Abdullah Hamad Al-Sager & Brothers. It is the country's first public-private partnership for an independent water and power project and is part of the long-term plan to develop Kuwait's installed electricity generation and water production capacity.
