Vinci wins cable contract for third Bosphorus bridge

5 Mar 14 Vinci subsidiary Freyssinet has signed a contract to supply and install cables and dampers for the third Bosphorus bridge in Istanbul, Turkey.

The deck will be supported by a hybrid suspension system comprising:

  • 176 Freyssinet stay cables requiring 8,400 tonnes of steel and made up of parallel strands, the longest of which has a length of 588m;
  • two 2,420m suspension cables holding 34 pairs of vertical hangers supporting the central section.

Freysinnet’s contract is with Hyundai Engineering & Construction - SK Engineering & Construction Joint Venture.

The structure will be part of the North Marmara Motorway, which will bypass the city and cross the Bosphorus to the north of Istanbul, relieving road traffic in the city and on the two existing bridges. The crossing will include a 1,408m central span with a 58m-wide deck carrying a two four-lane carriageways, with two railway lines in the middle.

Installation of the stay cables will begin in September for completion in July 2015.
