Water boost for contractors

25 May 11 A joint venture of Costain, Galliford Try and Atkins has been contracted by United Utilities for a £200m upgrade of the Sandon Dock sewage treatment works in Liverpool.

The project is part of the Asset Management Programme 5 (AMP5) with United Utilities.

The joint venture was appointed by UU to work on its AMP5 schemes in April 2010. The Liverpool waste water scheme will be progressed as part of the existing process alliance framework.

Work involves extending the current treatment works in Vauxhall into the adjacent dock along with major upgrade works to the existing plant, all of which will maintain the high quality of the final effluent in line with discharge consents set by the Environment Agency.

Galliford Try chief executive Greg Fitzgerald said: "We are delighted to secure this business from an existing framework client. It builds on our track record in delivering both clean and waste water infrastructure projects. Galliford Try is one of the UK's leading infrastructure contractors to the water industry, working under five-year asset management programmes as well as on single projects for seven of the country's major water utility businesses."

Costain has also secured an extension to its AMP5 contract with Severn Trent Water, worth around £45m.

Working in partnership with Severn Trent and other non-infrastructure contractors, a programme of major schemes worth £187m has been agreed and will include the provision of wastewater schemes for Costain to design and build.

Costain chief executive Andrew Wyliesaid: "We are delighted to have secured these two contracts, which demonstrate the UK water industry's continued investment in infrastructure, and help us build on our market leading position in the water sector."
