Wates wins V&A extension

22 Jan 14 Wates Construction has been awarded a contract to build the Victoria & Albert Museum’s planned Exhibition Road project in London.

The £42m extension, designed by Amanda Levete Architects, takes the form of a large column-free underground space for new galleries. An open courtyard and improved entrance to the Museum will be also be created at street level set within the historic facades of the V&A’s Grade I listed building. The new courtyard will house a café and be used for installations and events.

Enabling works were completed in June 2013 to divert services within the site. Main construction on the project starts this month, with completion scheduled for the end of 2016.

Wates saw off competition from Mace, BAM Construct, Balfour Beatty and Skanska to win the £23m constrcution contract.
