Liebherr excavator look back

Digger Blogger | 19:24, Thu September 15 2011

I have been digging back through the Digger Blog archives and have unearthed some superb promotional photos from Liebherr, which I have in my collection.

This late 1980’s Liebherr R962 in face shovel configuration was owned by Sir Alfred Mc Alpine and is seen here loading one of the company’s Aveling Barford rigid dumptrucks.

Next up is this stunning shot of a trio of Liebherr machines working for Manghan Shaw of Durham, the machines pictured consist of one R982 on the left of the shot and two R984’s with elevated cabs on the right of the shot. Eagle eyed readers with local knowledge might be able to identify where these machines were working at the time?

Some big kit now, with a trio of photos depicting Liebherr’s R996 Litronic models. These machines are powered by two Cummins engines which are capable of producing an impressive 3,000hp. These giants have an operating weight in backhoe configuration of 650.6 tonnes and in face shovel configuration of 655.5 tonnes. The machine in this first shot is seen working for Thiess in the Mount Owen mine in the Hunter Valley region in Australia.

This face shovel R996 example is seen working at the East Kalimanton coal mine in Indonesia.

This Thiess owned R996 face shovel is seen working at a gold and copper in the Queensland area. Also an older R994 can be seen in the background.

Some smaller examples from the Liebherr’s past range now, this A900 Litronic wheeled excavator with triple articulated boom/dipper combination was sold to the Witham Third District Internal Drainage board. Seen here performing ditch cleaning operations with reed rake bucket.

Here we see an R912 Litronic machine which at the time of shot had just been sold to Aberdeenshire based McIntosh plant hire, who are still to this day loyal Liebherr owners.

Here’s a fine shot of a Liebherr R932 sporting the colours of North East based earthworks and demolition contractor Thompsons of Prudhoe.

To round of this look back we have a great photo of the UK’s first Liebherr R954V demolition machine, hard at work for Liverpool based demolition contractor Sloyan Doyle.

I have many more photos like these to share with you over the coming months.
