Plant hire goes beyond construction

With summer coming to an end, many plant hire companies are looking back on a season where their equipment spent almost as much time at festival, fêtes and sporting events as they did on construction sites.

Hiring equipment and facilities to the events sector is big business these days. A-Plant bought EIB Event & Infrastructure Branding in December 2014 to put it into the temporary staging business. And GAP launched an Events Services division a couple of years back, providing fencing and barriers.

Power and lighting, and portable welfare facilities and toilets are also routinely supplied to big sporting events and pop festivals by companies more usually associated with construction plant hire.

Jarvie Plant, for example, reports a belter of a summer in the events sector. The Grangemouth-based firm has dispatched generators, tower lights, mini buses, welfare vans, grass tyre forklifts, telehandlers and access platforms to a range of events and festivals across Scotland and (partly thanks to a new depot in Manchester) the north of England.

“Our business is synonymous with supplying plant and equipment to construction sites, but we can also do so much more,” says Jarvie Plant’s sales director Ian Hutchison.

“We are seeing an increased demand from event organisers for our high quality equipment, so we very much regard this as a growth area.”

In July, Jarvie Plant supplied handling and access equipment to the Scottish Open golf tournament and the Scottish Ladies Open at Dundonald Links in Ayrshire, while also sending kit to the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale (pictured above and top).

“The forklift’s ability to have minimal impact on turfed areas, such as greens and fairways, was particularly appealing to the customer,” says Ian Hutchison.

Also playing a vital role at these golf tournaments were mini buses and vans, supplied by Jarvie, for shuttling competitors, course volunteers and staff to areas in and around the golf course.

Jarvie also supplied temporary accommodation, generators, power stores and tower lights that were used extensively at last month’s Edinburgh Festival (below).

Meanwhile, the TRNSMT Festival in Glasgow Green, Rewind Festival at Scone Palace and the Tartan Heart Festival on the Belladrum Estate in Beauly, near Inverness all benefits from Jarvie Plant’s access platforms, which proved ideal for rigging stage lighting.

“It’s been an extremely busy summer for us with our depots hiring out kit to all our regions,” Ian Hutchison adds.
