Communication and Monitoring Systems Technician

Location: BSR Group headquarters (Somerset), home based working and various project sites throughout the UK as required

Role Summary

The fundamental objective of the Communication and Monitoring Systems Technician role is to support and maintain solar PV and battery energy storage plant communications and monitoring systems, ensuring service availability throughout a portfolio of power plants developed, built, operated and maintained by BSR.

The role holder will undertake planned preventative and reactive software systems and hardware maintenance, both on and off site, and promptly resolve issues, maintaining highest achievable service availabilities for the O&M team and their clients. The role requires participating in an on-call rota for out-of-hours remote support, which is shared amongst the wider support team.

Duties and Responsibilities

·Maintaining communications and monitoring systems software and hardware installed at solar PV and battery energy storage plants throughout the UK

·Identifying, diagnosing and resolving hardware and software faults remotely and onsite

·Installing, maintaining and patching server operating systems; supporting application software and improving the monitoring of remote systems

·Sharing communications systems technical knowledge with the wider O&M and monitoring teams by producing and maintaining instructions and processes for carrying out planned maintenance and out-of-hours support

·Recording maintenance and troubleshooting works and ensuring plant O&M manual documentation is kept up to date

·Supporting operational staff with monitoring, data acquisition, security and CCTV systems issue resolutions

·Working with and managing sub-contractors as necessary, e.g. data acquisition system providers, vendor service support teams, SCADA suppliers, alarm receiving centres or CCTV contractors

·Adherence to and development of BSR Group's Quality Management System and processes

·Staying abreast of relevant developments in the telecommunications and technology marketplace

Experience and Skills

·Ideally industrial monitoring or SCADA systems in any of the following fields: industrial control systems, production line monitoring, meteorological monitoring, building energy management, solar PV or battery energy storage systems

·Windows and/or Linux operating systems: detailed knowledge or support experience including system builds, patching, software deployment and management

·Network maintenance e.g. LANs, WANs, VLANs, NAT, VPNs; modem, switch and router configuration; network physical installation including UTP, fibre optics, Wifi

·Communication protocols including TCP/IP, Modbus RTU / TCP, RS485 / serial communications

·Scripting and integration using PowerShell, VBA, Python, sh, JSON, web APIs etc

·Maintenance and installation of industrial control systems and/or IoT devices, serial devices, digital and analogue sensors, media and protocol converters

·Familiarity with network troubleshooting tools

·Understanding of cybersecurity issues

·Excellent Microsoft Excel analytical proficiency

·Technical problem-solving skills and an aptitude for implementing new ideas

·Self motivated; able to work remotely and independently

·Enthusiasm for ongoing personal development and learning

·Strong communicator with patience and perseverance, able to troubleshoot and problem-solve with remote staff or equipment

Education

·Ideally an undergraduate degree in STEM subject that provides a demonstrable background in IT, computing, computer networking, or electronics via relevant course modules, but may also include vocational training or extensive relevant work experience

·IT-related technical proficiency or security qualifications e.g. SANS, Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or similar are advantageous, but not essential
