Welfare Officer

Job Description

We are working with a fantastic college in South West London who are looking for a Welfare Officer immediately until at least Christmas longer for the right candidate. 20 hours per week, the hours are between 9.30-3.30. The rate to the candidate for this post is between £14 to £16 per hour plus holiday pay, dependent on qualifications and experience.

Role responsibilities
Can offer welfare support to meet the personal and financial needs of the students
Knowledge of welfare related issues that students in further education may face
Experience of delivering welfare advice in further education or Citizens Advice Bureau would be preferable
Lead the provision of welfare advice and guidance to individuals
Be able to work independently and with colleagues from other disciplines
Understanding of benefits system and working knowledge of financial support that can be offered to support students in further education.
Ensure that Learner Support Funds are allocated within external guidelines set, previous experience of coordinating this is preferable
Advice and make decision for the use of discretionary support funds, liaising with other Welfare Advisers (from other Colleges within the Group) and Student Payments staff
Knowledge of external organisations/charities that can support students with a range of welfare related issues
Be able to liaise with a range of staff and external contacts to support students to stay on course and achieve
Understanding of key part of safeguarding legislation in relation to Further Education and when to escalate concerns
Lead on coordinating the support for a cohort of students in care or that have left care, including tracking progress and sharing information with external services where appropriate
Knowledge of issues that Children Looked After and Care Leavers face

The person & qualifications
Knowledge of issues that Children Looked After and Care Leavers face
Able to produce reports as required
Good organisational and IT skills
Must have a DBS on the update service or applied for
