Section Engineer

Job Description

Section Engineer required to work on the Hinkley Point C project for Bylor. Bylor is a joint venture between Bouygues TP and Laing O'Rourke. SECTION ENGINEER – Specific roles and responsibilities 1 Safety, Health, Environment & Sustainability • Produce and get approved method statements, risk assessments, task sheets to enable safe systems of work to be implemented, review methods with a view to making improvements. • Establish, implement and monitor environmental systems in order to comply with company procedures and to satisfy statutory regulations. 2 Dimensional/Spatial Control • Reviews how achievable, suitable and compatible the specified tolerances are & gets amended as required • Supervises, provides training and ensures competence of those carrying out dimensional control tasks • Provides advice and assistance in resolution of survey and dimensional control issues 3 Workmanship, Quality, Inspection & Testing • Ensures that pre-pour and post-pour quality checks are carried out and liaises with Quality Inspector. • Writes / Reviews ITPs • Ensures that sub-contractors quality procedures comply with quality requirements • Determines remedial actions for non conformances and ensures that these are approved and implemented • Ensure that NCR are satisfactorily closed out & that appropriate controls are applied to prevent reoccurrence • Produces construction / installation details which improve build-ability • Manages the production of quality assurance information for inclusion in the construction records • Takes responsibility for ensuring that company & project quality requirements procedures are implemented 4 Information, Change Control & Records • Ensures that up-to-date construction information is distributed to all relevant parties and used at all times • Disseminates construction information to sub-contractors, foremen and operatives • Sets up mechanisms to inform the engineering team of changes as they occur • Ensure that relevant as-built information is collected and collated, including NCR, RDC, TQ, etc. • Ensures that RDC forms are raised for all design changes that affect the Permanent Works • Interprets as-built surveys / installations are checked prior to construction of follow-on activities 5 Permanent Works Materials, Products, Plant & Systems • Ensures that the testing is carried out for materials, products, plant and systems on their project supervising testing and that this is carried out safely and to the specification • Ensure correct materials, products, plant and systems are used / installed in accordance with project specifications and manufacturer’s specifications • Where required prepare weekly programmes and monitor site progress against them. Produce productivity and wastage reports and the review of simple outputs against target costs. • Take off and produce requisitions for materials to be delivered to site ensuring compliance with the standards and specifications. 6 Construction Methods, Practices and Innovation • Evaluates alternative solutions to determine if they are more effective than current methods • Initiates 3D modelling to develop methods, clarify issues and resolve method related problems • Carries out value engineering; understands the financial and client implications of de-scoping and constantly strives to add value to our projects • Is instrumental in finding alternative solutions to existing methods and practices to improve productivity, quality or safety helping to create best practice • Develops site practice such that method statements are always followed 7 Temporary Works/Systems & Cranes • Produces design briefs for the temporary works in their area • Holds a valid Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) card (may be a red “trainee” card) for Appointed Person (AP), and carries out the role of Appointed Person when required for Basic & Standard lifts • Produces Lifting Plan and Schedule of Common Lifts and completes LOAF forms • Carries out the role of Temporary Works Inspector (TWI) for complex temporary works ensuring compliance with company procedures • Carries out the role of Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) for projects involving standard temporary works is Deputy TWC for complex projects ensuring compliance with company procedures 8 Design Process, Coordination and Management • Assists project engineer with this as per their job role 9 Engineering Knowledge – Capture, Sharing & Using Provide value engineering in determining the best solutions to engineering problems. Skills / Knowledge / Experience • 2 years Site experience • Understanding of civil engineering projects / complex projects • Experience of managing people in project environments Qualifications required: • Degree in Engineering • Working towards CEng / MICE Interpersonal Skills: • Good communication skills • Ability to present to team and co-workers • Builds an effective team • Ensures timely decision making, driven off data • Presents a professional image • Seeks to minimise waste in resources and materials • Demonstrates commitment to work to processes • Inspires, challenges and motivates others • Promotes the values of the project
