Cemex has been picked by Amey to supply asphalt for the Birmingham highways maintenance PFI, in a deal worth £35m to the aggregates firm.

The contract is initially for five years, covering a 'core investment period'.

Cemex Surfacing will supply over 30,000 tonnes of asphalt during the first year and between three and four times this amount in each of the next four years.

The investment will be in road repairs over a network of 1,500 miles of highways plus maintenance of footways and bridges.

Amey's Birmingham PFI contract is worth £2.7bn over 25 years.

The asphalt is being produced at Cemex's Washwood Heath coating plant in Birmingham and delivered to sites mostly within six miles of the plant.
