30 Mar 10 Four teams are in the race for Network Rail’s first major contract on the £16bn Crossrail project.

Four teams are in the race for Network Rail’s first major contract on the £16bn Crossrail project.

Carillion, Colas/Morgan Est, VolkerFitzpatrick/Bovis and Balfour Beatty have been invited to tender for the design-and-build contract, which covers a two-mile stretch of the Crossrail route from Plumstead to Abbey Wood in south-eastLondon.

It includes construction work on the new Abbey Wood station, which is the terminus for Crossrail on the Kent spur.

The Abbey Wood station work will include two new Crossrail platforms, plus lifts and escalators. In addition, a four-track railway will be created, requiring Network Rail to improve five bridges and build two new overhead electrified railway lines between Plumstead and Abbey Wood.

Network Rail is responsible for the design, development and delivery of the parts of Crossrail that are on the existing network, covering 70km of track and 28 stations from Maidenhead in the west to Abbey Wood and Shenfield in the east.

* Network Rail has also issued an invitation to tender for the development of a major project at Stockley Flyover in west London.

The flyover is located in the busy Heathrow Airport Junction area, servicing trains to and from Heathrow as well as along the Great Western main line. It will also carry Crossrail services from 2017 and requires capacity improvement works.

The work will consist of a new flyover constructed near the existing layout to provide a separate route for trains crossing the main line. The tender covers the design development of this work.
