Kier launches its court appeal today against the £18m fine handed down by the Office of Fair Trading into bid-rigging in the construction industry.

The contractor is one of 25 appealing against the OFT's fines, which totalled £130m.

Kier's profit for the six months to 31 December 2009 was chopped in half as a result of the fine.

The appeal will be watched closely by other construction companies angry at their fines.

Last month, the OFT claimed that its investigation had led to the construction industry “changing its behaviour”.
