Major construction companies grow at expense of smaller firms

The UK's biggest construction companies have grown during the recession at the expense of their smaller rivals, according to analysis by the Financial Times.

The FT looked at the 50 largest construction companies and found that the average contract size among the top five increased to £13.5m during the year to May, a rise of 20% on the figure for the previous 12 months.

Meanwhile, the average contract size of the five smallest construction companies in the analysis halved over the two-year period to £670,000.

However, the FT predicts that bigger firms will soon start to muscle in on smaller contracts as large public sector projects start to dry up.
