21 Apr 10 Sir Robert McAlpine has been awarded the £20m construction contract to build a new BMX arena in Manchester.

Sir Robert McAlpine has been awarded the £20m construction contract to build a new BMX arena in Manchester.

The contract is for the design and construction of a fully enclosed 70x100m BMX racing track area with a clear structural span, to be able to seat approximately 2,000 spectators at national BMX competitions.

The size of the arena will be approximately 10,902m2, including office space of 1,000m2. The main structure will be constructed in steel which will create a clear and uninterrupted arena space.

The building will contain all supporting facilities associated with the track and will be physically linked to Manchester Velodrome.

Improvements will be made to the external areas surrounding the centre including upgrading an existing emergency access onto Stuart Street to serve the South car park.

The southern and northern entrances to the centre will be developed to form enhanced public spaces, including a large plaza along the southern elevation of the BMX Centre.

A new thoroughfare will be created from the plaza down to a new pedestrian bridge crossing over the canal, and connecting to the new Metrolink stop, canal towpath and the district centre.
