UK Coal and its development partner Helical Bar have gained planning consent for their proposed £800m government office campus and residential scheme in Waverley, South Yorkshire.

Rotherham Borough Council granted planning permission for the Waverley New Community residential scheme plus a 640,000 sq ft government office campus on the site.

Haworth Estates, the property arm of the UK’s largest independent coal producer, will redevelop 740 acres of brownfield land that formerly housed the famous Orgreave Colliery.

Over the next 20 years, 3,890 new homes, two primary schools, public and recreational facilities and green spaces will be constructed.

The government campus is expected to create up to 4,900 jobs.

Sue Anderson, director of management operations at Harworth Estates said: “This is an ambitious and exciting project and shows UK Coal’s long term commitment to investing in Rotherham.

"Over the next 20 years Waverley will deliver significant regeneration and economical growth to Rotherham and surrounding areas and will be a lasting legacy giving the community something to be proud of."
