The South Coast Street Lighting PFI is the largest street lighting PFI project in the UK and includes lighting services for Hampshire County Council, Southampton City Council and West Sussex County Council.

SEC will carry out the work through another SSE subsidiary, Tay Valley Lighting.

The work involves replacement and maintenance of  250,000 streetlights, illuminated signs and bollards.

The firm now has 10 long-term street lighting replacement and maintenance PFI, and over 500,000 lighting units covered by such contracts.

Colin Hood, chief operating officer of SSE, said: “The PFI approach has proved to be a successful way of replacing older street lighting infrastructure and is delivering better lit streets that helps communities lead safer and more secure lives.”
