Aecom wins NY biogas project

10 Oct 14 Aecom has won a design-build contract to provide engineering, procurement and construction services for the Newtown Creek renewable natural gas project in New York City.

The project, which is for National Grid in partnership with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, will be one of the first in the USA that directly injects renewable gas into a local distribution system, and it is projected to produce a reliable source of clean energy, reduce air emissions and help tackle climate change.

It involves injecting gas into National Grid’s existing network through designing and constructing a purification system that converts biogas by-product from the Newtown Creek wastewater treatment plant into renewable natural gas for residential and commercial use.

“Aecom is thrilled to be able to contribute to this innovative project that helps New York City work towards its sustainability goals through the conversion of waste to natural gas,” said Aecom president and chief executive officer Michael Burke. “At Aecom, our vision of a more-sustainable future drives much of our work, and this project is a great example of how environmentally forward-thinking designs can be incorporated into traditional infrastructure.”

Construction of the purification system will begin this year and is expected to be completed by fall 2016.
