Approval for £500m Rathbone Place scheme

16 Oct 13 Construction is set to start next year on a £500m redevelopment of a 2.3 acre site at the east end of London’s Oxford Street.

Great Portland Estates has received resolution to grant planning permission from the City of Westminster for its proposed development at Rathbone Place, W1.

Architect Make has designed a mixed-use scheme to replace the former Post Office site with new offices, shops and 162 homes totalling 414,000 sq ft. The development will include a new public square and new pedestrian routes linking Rathbone Place and Newman Street.

The developer acquired the site for £120m in November 2011, leasing it back to Royal Mail Group, who vacated in August 2013.

Great Portland Estates said that it planned to start work on Rathbone Place in 2014 for completion in 2016.

Portfolio director Neil Thompson said "Rathbone Place will be one of the West End's most exciting new developments and is one of several projects GPE are working on for delivery over the next few years."
