Arup wins contract on major Canadian bridge

21 Oct 13 The government of Canada has awarded Arup Canada a contract worth CA$15.2m (£9.2m) for engineering and coordination services for a new bridge over the St Lawrence in Montreal.

The new crossing is a replacement for the Champlain Bridge, which is one of Canada’s busiest bridges and carries an estimated CA$20bn in international trade annually.

Arup’s work will include professional engineering services related to bridge, highway and traffic engineering and preparation of procurement documentation for the newly accelerated bridge.

The existing bridge was built about 50 years ago primarily of reinforced concrete beams supported by concrete piers. Corrosion caused by road salt and the high volume of heavy vehicles have contributed to the ageing of its structure, requiring extensive maintenance.
