Astaldi signs $1bn Canadian hydro contract

2 Dec 13 Astaldi Canada has signed a CA$1bn (£575m) contract to build the major civil works for the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric generating project in Canada.

The project value as may end up being even larger as it includes an option for a 750m-long dam. Signing of the contract follows the naming of Astaldi as Nalcor Energy’s preferred contractor in October.

Work will begin before the year-end and take approximately four years.

The 824MW Muskrat Falls development, which also includes a 750m-long dam over the Churchill River along with another project at Gull Island, is part of a larger plan to develop the lower Churchill River. With a combined capacity of over 3,000 MW, the projects are seen as the best undeveloped hydroelectric resource in North America.

The civil works package is the largest associated with the development and the scope of work includes construction of the power house, intake and gated spillway. Astaldi's contract also includes an option for the construction of the dam for a value that is still under negotiations.
