Bell & Webster to supply units for Newcastle halls

6 Aug 13 A Newcastle student accommodation scheme is going to be built from precast concrete units made 170 miles away in Grantham.

Northern Developments is converting the former Tyne Tees Television Studios site in Newcastle into a £20m student accommodation centre, called The Studios U-Student Village.

It has placed a £2.68m subcontract for production of precast concrete units with ElecoPrecast Bell & Webster. Bell & Webster will manufacture and construct 373 student accommodation rooms.

Once the ground works are complete the new building will comprise of 1,680 precast concrete units that will be manufactured at Bell & Webster's factory in Grantham, Lincolnshire.  Manufacturing began in July 2013 with the first delivery and erecting on site anticipated by October, ready for first fix electrics, plumbing and bathroom pods to be installed.

Completion is scheduled for the start of the 2014/2015 academic year.

Bell & Webster has previously made units for student halls at the universities of Essex, Reading, Birmingham, Abertay and London
