Mr Anderson, aged 70 this year, will assume overall operational responsibility for the activities of Byrne Group companies, reporting directly to chief executive Michael Byrne.

Byrne said that Mr Anderson’s appointment would allow Tony Dowle to concentrate exclusively on his role as group commercial director on the Byrne Group board.

John Anderson spent 25 years with Bovis, becoming managing director of Bovis Construction in 1993 and later managing director of Bovis Lend Lease Europe. He left in 2000 to join Land Securities and then moved to Chelsfield in 2003 for a couple of years before moving into consultancy roles.

Michael Byrne, who took over as chief executive after the death of his father Patsy in 2013, said of his new MD: “John brings a wealth of experience in managing major construction businesses. His strategic and operational insight, drive and determination will further enhance the company’s management team and support the group’s development.”

The company also has a new finance director, with Daren Harris joining from NG Bailey at the beginning of November. He has taken over from Philip Wainwright who had been acting as interim finance director.

Byrne Group has a forward order book of more than £300m and has several high profile central London contracts including the Bloomberg HQ in the City of London, the redevelopment of the BBC White City and the new Christian Dior flagship store on New Bond Street.
