China denies safety issues on new 42km bridge

8 Jul 11 Engineers responsible for China’s record-breaking Jiaozhou Bay Bridge deny that the bridge was opened to traffic before being safe and complete.

There have been reports of incomplete safety barriers and loose nuts on guard rails on the 41.58km bridge. The reports blamed a rushed opening to ensure completion in time for the Communist Party’s 90th anniversary.

The structure is the world's longest cross-sea bridge, taking the record from the Hangzhou Bay Bridge. The Y-shaped crossing connects the port city of Qingdao with Huangdao and an airport.

It has been built for Shandong Hi-speed (SDHS) and was opened last week in a ceremony attended led by local and regional officials.
