CITB-ConstructionSkills welcomes a new member to the board

11 Jan 12 CITB-ConstructionSkills’ Chief Executive Mark Farrar has today (10 January 2012) welcomed the announcement that John Lorimer is to join the board.

A civil engineer by background, John heads up Manchester City Council’s (MCC) £300m-a-year Capital Programme Division, which is currently delivering a range of transformational projects including the £500m Better Schools Foundation programme.

John’s appointment as a non-executive trustee to the Industry Training Board  is due to his extensive procurement experience with major construction contractors and his experience of instigating skills and training programmes such as MCC’s ‘Young People into Construction’ initiative, which now employs over 100 apprentices and trainees.

Commenting on the appointment, Mark Farrar said: “On behalf of CITB-ConstructionSkills, I am delighted to announce John’s appointment as a new member of the board. John brings with him a wealth of expertise, particularly around procurement and governance from both the private and public sectors. His experience will strengthen our work around public sector procurement that we are taking forward with the Client Based Approach project to bring new blood into the industry.

“Through this new initiative, we are working closely with local councils to look for possible employment and training opportunities for all major developments based on each projects size and value. It is a means of supporting both national and local government to increase the numbers of apprenticeships and leave a lasting skills-legacy for local communities.

“I’m sure John will also greatly enhance the Board’s thinking on such issues as the impact of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the importance of maintaining investment in skills and training.”

John’s first board meeting will be on 22 February 2012.
