In March 2016 we reported that Galliford Try had won a £62m contract to replace the Richardson Road – Ricky Road – flats at Newcastle University.

In May, the contractor was still referring to the Park View Student Village project as a £62m contract.

Now it confirms that it has signed a £68m contract for the project, which involves construction of 1,277 student bedrooms across a series of six blocks, ranging from four to 10 storeys, adjacent to the main university campus on the site of the Ricky Road flats. The existing buildings, built in the 1970s, are being demolished.

Completion date remains summer 2018, ahead of the new academic year.

Cliff Wheatley, managing director of Galliford Try North East and Yorkshire, said: “The ‘Ricky Road’ flats have been at the heart of student folklore in the city for a long time, and we hope that the new Park View village will similarly be appreciated by the students while enhancing their experience of life at the University.”
