Contractors called for £80m John Moores development

25 Nov 14 Liverpool John Moores University has begun the search for a contractor to build its £80m Copperas Hill development in the city centre.

The Copperas Hill site was acquired by Liverpool John Moores University in 2011. The former Royal Mail sorting office is a classic 1970s building and sits on a prime city centre site behind Lime Street station.

The university has now published a contract notice seeking a main contractor and building services supply chain partner to enter into a design and build contract to turn the old sorting office into a central teaching, library and sports facility.

The scheme also includes landscaping of adjacent land to create a suitable setting for the building and a city park.

The client already has its own team in place, comprising:

  • Project manager – Christal Management
  • Architects – BDP
  • Cost consultants & employers agent – Sweett
  • Civil & structural engineer – Curtins
  • Building services engineer – Arup.

The university plans to submit a full planning application for the scheme in the summer of 2015 with a view to starting work onsite early in 2016. Parts of the building should be operational for the 2017/18 academic year and the full site operational in 2018.
