Councils join for highways efficiencies

8 May 12 Two Lancashire councils are planning to join their highway maintenance services in a search for efficiencies.

Halton and Warrington borough councils have jointly gone out to tender to find a single contractor to take on a six-year highways improvement and maintenance term service contract.

The initial contract runs to 2019 but there is the possibility of up to four one-year extensions. Estimated value is £70m.

The contract notice states that the councils “are seeking economies of scale” although they are reserving the right to revert to separate contracts for each council should that prove to offer them the best deal.
