CRH buys Ukraine cement plant from Lafarge

29 Apr 13 CRH is set to become the market leader in cement in the Ukraine after buying Lafarge's cement activities there for €96m (£80.7m).

The business comprises the Mykolaiv Cement plant located in the Lviv region, in the western part of the country.

CRH entered the Ukraine market in 1999 with the acquisition of Podilsky Cement and in 2011 commissioned a new dry process kiln at the facility with an annual clinker capacity of 2.3 million tonnes. Also in 2011, CRH acquired a majority stake in Odessa Cement.

The Lafarge transaction, which is expected to close before the end of the year, is subject to the approval of the relevant Ukrainian authorities.

Lafarge remains present in Ukraine through three aggregates quarries serving the Ukrainian as well as the Russian and Polish markets.
