Along with the new 18-tonner, the Swindon-based company has also bought three new Stage IIIB compliant Doosan DX140LC-3 models, which are 14 tonners.

The excavators were supplied by Bridgwater-based dealer Kellands (Plant Sales) Ltd.

The Doosan DX180LC-3 excavator is working with one of the new DX140LC-3 models on a groundworks contract being carried out by John O’Flynn on a housebuilding development at Harry Stoke, near Bristol.

John O’Flynn plant manager Pete Rowland said: “The new excavators have joined a Doosan 22-tonne DX225LC excavator we already owned.  Though the DX225LC model is an excellent machine for road work and other civil engineering projects, it is a bit too big for the groundworks contracts typically found in housebuilding.

“This is where the two new machines come into their own. With the 18 tonner, we are getting plenty of power and digging performance, which allows it to handle a lot of the heavy earthmoving work on site, whilst it is still compact enough for other work such as that on the new roads for the development.

“This is quite a big site, but the DX140LC-3 excavator is the perfect size for working on the foundations and between the plots for the new houses. The DX140LC-3 excavator is ideal for a wide range of our excavation and general construction applications.”

The DX180LC-3 crawler excavator is powered by the Doosan DL06 turbocharged EGR diesel engine running at 1950 rpm and delivering 3% more power [91.2 kW (SAE J1349)] and 15% more torque (54 kgfm) than the engine in the previous DX180LC Stage IIIA model.  The new excavator offers a 5 to 10% reduction in fuel consumption, depending on the operating mode selected and the work being undertaken.

The DX180LC-3 excavator has an operating weight of 18040 kg with standard boom, arm and a 0.70m3 bucket.  The bucket breakout force is 13.1 tonnes (ISO), while the arm breakout force is 9.3 tonnes (ISO).  Maximum digging reach is 9.13m at ground level in the standard configuration and the maximum digging depth is 6.11m.

The 14-tonne DX140LC-3 crawler excavator has the Doosan DL06K engine, providing 15% more power [82 kW (109 HP) @ 1850 RPM (SAE J1995)] than the previous Stage IIIA model.  Contributing to the overall reduction in fuel consumption in the new DX140LC-3 excavator is the improved cooling efficiency and the installation of a new fan clutch with electrically controlled fan speed.
