April’s initial estimates from the statistical office of the European Union show that there was a 3.2% increase in the eurozone, due to building construction rising by 3.3% and civil engineering by 2.5%. Across the 28 countries of the EU (EU28), the increase of 2.7% is due to building construction rising by 3.5% and civil engineering by 1.0%.
Among with available data, the highest increases were recorded in Slovenia (+27.8%), Hungary (+22.0%) and Sweden (+19.8%), and the largest decreases in Romania (-18.4%), Italy (-4.6%) and the United Kingdom (-3.4%).
There was little change from March 2017 to April 2017 following last month’s falls. Production in the construction sector remained stable across the EU28 and increased by 0.3% in the euro area (EA19). In March 2017, it had fallen by 1.1% in the euro area and by 0.5% in the EU28.
The increase of 0.3% in production in construction in the euro area in April 2017 compared with March is due to building construction rising by 0.7%, while civil engineering fell by 1.5%. In the EU28, the stable level is due to building construction rising by 0.2%, while civil engineering fell by 1.0%.
Among member states with available data, the highest increases were recorded in Sweden (+3.8%), France (+3.5%) and the Czech Republic (+1.6%), and the largest decreases in Romania (-7.7%), Italy (-4.1%) and Hungary (-2.6%).
