European construction bounces back

20 Jun 14 Production in the construction sector grew by 0.8% in the 18 countries of the Eurozone (EA18) and by 0.6% across all 28 EU countries (EU28) in April compared to March, according to first estimates from the statistical office of the European Union.

In March 2014, production in construction fell by 0.3% and 0.2% respectively, said Eurostat.

In April 2014 compared with April 2013, production in construction increased by 8.0% in the Eurozone and by 7.2% in the EU28.

The monthly increase of 0.8% in the Euro area is due to building construction rising by 1.0%, while civil engineering fell by 0.9%.

In the EU28, the increase of 0.6% is due to building construction rising by 0.9%, while civil engineering dropped by 0.8%.

The highest increases in production in construction were observed in Slovenia (+6.7%), Spain (+4.8%) and Portugal (+4.5%), and the largest decreases in Poland (-5.4%), Romania (-4.7%) and Slovakia (-2.0%).

The increase of 8.0% in production in construction in the Euro area in April 2014, compared with April 2013, is due to building construction rising by 9.4% and civil engineering by 2.8%. In the EU28, the increase of 7.2% is due to building construction rising by 8.6% and civil engineering by 1.7%.

The highest increases in production in construction were registered in Spain (+53.4%), Slovenia (+48.8%), Hungary (+27.2%) and Poland (+13.3%), and the largest decreases in Portugal (-9.0%), Romania (-6.8%), Slovakia (-5.1%) and Italy (-5.0%).
