Expansion of research facility underway

4 Jan 12 Surgo Construction has further cemented its relationship with Durham University with commencement of work on a £1.8 million project, to expand the Wolfson Research Institute at its Queen’s Campus in Stockton.

This latest project follows on from completion of work on the Queen’s Campus sports centre in 2010 and a number of other successful projects for Durham University in the past.

Surgo is the principal contractor on the design and build contract which will be completed in June, following a 45-week build schedule.

The new building and facilities will benefit the work of the Institute which focuses on research into medicine, health and the wellbeing of people and places and adds to the existing provision which includes laboratories, offices and accommodation for staff and research students.

The contractor has also announced a £2.1million contract win in the secondary education sector, on an extension and refurbishment project for the St Thomas More RC School in Blaydon.

Speaking of Surgo’s work on the Wolfson Research Institute and the latest contract win at the St Thomas More RC School, Jeff Alexander, director said,

“We are delighted to be working for Durham University again, enhancing its first class facilities in Stockton. Our site teams have work well underway and are on track with the 45-week detailed build programme.

“With regard to win further projects in the secondary education sector, our appointment at the St Thomas More School is a clear reflection of our ability to continue to secure work representative of our core business.  Completion of this scheme is due in the summer of 2012.”

While on site at St Thomas More RC School, Surgo will construct a number of new classrooms; modify existing accommodation and remove temporary classrooms as part of the school’s long term improvement programme.

Surgo Construction is also Durham County Council’s  preferred contractor to carry out work on two schools in the county, full details of which will be announced at a later date.
