GB wins Wakefield school arts centre

3 Oct 13 GB Building Solutions has won a £6.1m design and build contract for a new arts centre building at Outwood Grange Academy in Wakefield.

The scheme involves the construction of a creative arts facility. The 3000m2 building will house the drama, dance, music and art.

The contract includes the demolition of an existing building, after the new building is complete.

This is GB’s second design and build education project in Wakefield, following a £4.4m project for Wakefield College that was completed in September 2012.

GB is also currently working on the University of Huddersfield’s £22.5m Learning and Leisure Centre and a £3.7m Central Services building envelope scheme.

GB Group managing director Andy Hall said: “Working in a live school with 2,200 students presents its own challenges, but these are ones we have encountered many times before so are well equipped to deal with.  Conscious of the environment in which we are working, we will be liaising closely with the staff and students to keep everyone informed to ensure a safe environment at all times.  There will also be employment and skills opportunities throughout the development.

Construction began on site last week and the new facilities are scheduled to open to students in August 2014.
