Gifford to help HA with drainage strategy

2 Dec 10 Consulting engineer Gifford has been appointed to advise the Highways Agency (HA) in its development of a sustainable drainage strategy to reduce flood risk and water pollution from road runoff.

The HA initiative follows the passage of the Floods and Water Management Act 2010 earlier this year, itself a response to the severe flooding in England during 2007. It also responds to the European Union’s Water Framework Directive which aims to improve the quality of the water environment.

Gifford is working as a member of a consortium looking at a number of different issues. Gifford will review the current state of knowledge of the performance of drainage treatment systems and develop a decision support tool to aid the selection of these systems. It will then combine the results of this work with those from other consortium members into recommendations for the future development of the HA’s sustainable drainage strategy.

The commission follows Gifford’s recent advisory role to the HA when it revised elements of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges that is the blueprint for new construction projects.
