The Al Farjan Recreational Sports Facilities aim to create new social spaces and encourage community participation in sporting activities. Grimshaw’s design includes the requisite sports fields, an outdoor children’s playground, public realm landscaping and amenities that serve as informal spaces for young people, families and sports enthusiasts to develop healthy lifestyles in the local community.
The facilities for football, volleyball, basketball and handball are designed to provide a welcoming environment. At the centre of the complex, an elevated café acts as a social hub surrounded by the various courts and pitches.
The design is intended to serve as a kit of parts that can be deployed elsewhere in arrangements of various sizes so that it can be adapted for the construction of future recreational facilities throughout Qatar.
