Hull energy plant out to tender

3 Jul 13 A £120m contract to build a waste-to-energy plant in Hull has been putout to tender.

The client, Energy Works (Hull) Ltd, is a subsidiary of local specialist engineering contractor Spencer Group. It already has planning permission for the scheme.

Energy Works intends to procure a partner to design and build the fluidised bed gasification plant. The facility is intended to recover energy from around 200,000 tonnes of waste a year. It will create synthetic gas that will be combusted to produce steam to drive a conventional steam turbine, generating 25MW of electricity.

The aim is to start construction by February 2014 and completion in spring 2016. Energy Works expects to create 200 construction jobs during the build, which will be on the site of the former ADM cocoa mills site on Cleveland Street and land at Dalton Street currently occupied by a council waste depot. The two sites will be linked by a high-level conveyor and access route.

The contract value is estimated to be in the range of £90m to £120m.

Deadline for submissions of requests to participate is 29 July.
