The seven-storey building will have an internal floor space of 9,250m2 connected to one of the university’s existing buildings. Interserve will also alter a vehicle access to the northeast of the new building and create extra car parking.

Completion is scheduled for the end of 2015.

The new building, designed by architect Scott Brownrigg, will have an 18m x 80m main atrium, within which a pod-like structure, housing an 80-seat lecture theatre, will be suspended. Several bridges will link the pod to the new and existing building.

The design of the pod supposedly reflects Southampton’s nautical heritage. Beneath the pod, a lower atrium will lead to underground lecture theatres as well as lower level classrooms, kitchens, offices and a plant room.

The new building will also have a main conference centre, a number of smaller conference rooms and numerous classrooms. There will be 2,000m2 of classroom space in all.

Interserve Engineering Services will provide all mechanical and electrical services on the scheme.

The design team comprises Scott Brownrigg as architect and CDM coordinators, Arup as M&E designer and Scott White & Hookins as structural engineer. Also on board are International Fire Consultants Ltd and Hann Tucker Associates Acoustic Engineers.
